10 things you need to know this Tuesday Morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday, approved February 2022 for the conduct of the national convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Chairman of the Progressives Governors’ Forum and Kebbi State Governor, Atiku Bagudu, made the announcement in Abuja on Monday.

2. The West Africa Examination Council (WAEC), on Monday, released the result of the 2021 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). Mr Patrick Areghan, Head of the Nigeria National Office of the Council who disclosed this on Monday, said a total of 80.56 per cent have been fully processed, and 19.44 per cent are still being processed due to some issues being resolved.

3. The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has rejected Igbo leaders call on President Muhammadu Buhari to release Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). At a press conference in Kano on Monday, spokesman of the coalition, Abdul-Azeen Suleiman, criticised Buhari’s response to Igbo leaders, saying “the North would hold Buhari responsible for the blood of its people unlawfully killed due to the activities of Kanu.

4. Many, including two children, have been killed in a fire outbreak at the popular Nembe-Bonny Jetty Waterfront in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Several boats and goods worth millions of Naira were also destroyed in the inferno.

5. Personnel of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), identified as Ogah Bercy, a Lance Corporal, has lost her life after she was bitten by a snake at her apartment in NAF Base, Bill Clinton Drive, Abuja. It was gathered that Bercy, who was attached to Intelligence Operations at Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), lived at CBQ 1, Flat 2 of the Base before the incident happened.

6. Veteran Nigerian comic actor, Babatunde Omidina fondly referred to as Baba Suwe is dead. The news of his death was confirmed by the president of the Theatre Arts and Motion Picture Producers Association of Nigeria, Bolaji Amusan also known as Mr Latin.

7. President Muhammadu Buhari, has approved the appointment of Mandate Secretaries, Executive Secretary, Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Heads of Agencies and Personal Aides to the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Bello. The minister made the disclosure in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Anthony Ogunleye, on Monday in Abuja.

8. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has said terrorism in the West Africa is caused by weak governance, poverty, youth unemployment and human rights abuses. The Commission also disclosed that Boko Haram attacks in the Lake Chad Basin alone in the last 10 years have led to more than 30,000 deaths, with terrorism displacing over three million people in the region.

9. Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State. has called on the Federal Government and relevant policy makers to initiate steps towards reducing the rising cost of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in the country. The governor made the call at a two-day LPG sensitisation and awareness campaign organised by the National LPG Expansion Implementation Plan, Office of the Vice President in conjunction with the State Government on Monday in Asaba.

10. Governors, who are members of the All Progressives Congress, have been unable to agree on a common position on the direct mode of primaries imposed on political parties by the National Assembly. It was gathered that the meeting between the 22 APC governors on Sunday ended with no consensus.
