10 things you need to know this Tuesday morning

1. Some of the Nigerians, who are trapped over the crisis between Russia and Ukraine, are not willing to return to the country. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyema, disclosed this when he met with Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, on Monday.

2. A State High Court sitting in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital, yesterday dismissed the suit challenging the defection of Governor David Umahi from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Umahi, who won the governorship election twice in 2015 and 2019 on the platform of PDP, joined the APC in November, 2020.

3. The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, on Monday, staged a protest in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and some other parts of the nation over the lingering strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

4. Some Nigerians, whose children are studying in Ukraine, stormed the Russian embassy in Abuja on Monday. The parents, who wielded different placards, asked Russia to end the invasion of Ukraine, which entered its fifth day on Monday.

5. The Supreme Court, yesterday, in Abuja fixed May 27 for judgment in a suit by former Rivers State governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, seeking to stop his probe in an alleged N96 billion fraud and fraudulent sales of valued assets belonging to Rivers State.

6. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) says it will not call off the one-month warning strike it began on February 14. Emmanuel Osodeke, President of the union, who spoke yesterday, emphasized that ASUU would not be backing down on the strike as the FG has consistently failed to keep the promises made to the union years back.

7. The Kaduna State Government has advised residents to be vigilant over the fear of possible terrorists’ attacks, using Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). The Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Mr Samuel Aruwan, gave the advice in a statement issued in Kaduna on Monday.

8. For claiming that his party would not use the Department of State Services operatives to harass people upon taking over power in 2023, the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr. Iyorcha Ayu, has been cautioned to stop maligning the Nigerian secret police.

9. A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, yesterday, ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, to release an aggregate sum of N82 billion to communities in Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. The money, which is to be deducted from accounts of NNPC, and its joint venture partner, Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited, was awarded as special and general damages for oil spillages that occurred in the communities from 2000 to 2010.

10. Detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is very much alive and still being detained in the facility of the Department of State Services, DSS, his lawyer, Mr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor disclosed on Monday. Ejiofor, in a statement he published on his official Facebook page, gave an update on his legal team’s routine visit to Kanu at the DSS headquarters in Abuja.
