10 things you need to know this Wednesday Morning

1. The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has zoned its chairmanship position to the north ahead of the 2023 elections. Governors Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna) and Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi), announced this while responding to Daily Trust’s question at a media briefing, which was held after President Muhammadu Buhari’s meeting with governors of the ruling party.

2. The National Chairman of PDP, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, has said the inability of the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) to conduct its national convention shows why the country “is in a terrible situation”. Addressing the PDP women leaders from the 36 states of the country in Abuja, on Tuesday, Ayu said a “party that cannot hold a convention, cannot lead the country.”

3. A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency’s (NDLEA) request to detain the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, for 14 more days. Kyari has been in detention since February 14, 2022, over alleged drug trafficking.

4. President Muhammadu Buhari has praised himself, saying that if he had not intervened in Lagos-Ibadan transport projects, “people would’ve been trekking from Lagos to Abuja”. Buhari on Tuesday said prioritizing infrastructure projects ameliorated hardship in some parts of the country, particularly the quick intervention on the Lagos-Ibadan route, with completion of road and rail lines.

5. IGP, Usman Baba Alkali said yesterday that the Nigeria Police had no business being in the Contributing Pension Scheme, CPS. In his presentation at a public hearing on two pension bills to amend the relevant sections of the Pension Act of 2014 to exit the police from the CPS, in the House of Representatives, the IGP said the lives of serving officers, men and retirees of the Force were not any better with the scheme.

6. Boko Haram members attacked communities in Niger State after killing four Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) operatives on Monday. The police confirmed that four personnel died at Galadima-Kogo village, in Shiroro LGA after contact with a buried Improvised Explosive Device (IED).

7. The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, yesterday, said he is surprised that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Ministry of Education are yet to resolve their face-off, which led to the current strike by the union.

8. Wuhan in China has reported new positive cases for COVID-19, suspected to be the Omicron variant. Authorities in the capital of China’s Hubei Province confirmed 14 cases as of Tuesday afternoon.

9. A policeman, Sergeant Adeleke Ogunsola, has died after being hit by an unnamed driver of a former Ogun State Governor, Gbenga Daniel. It was gathered that the incident happened on Saturday at Daniel’s Asoludero residence at Sagamu, Ogun State.

10. Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to initiate a new strategic approach to save Nigeria’s economy, saying the country is currently surviving on loans. The traditional leader made the call on Tuesday during the 2022 edition of Grandmothers’ Festival in Epe.
