Suspected herdsmen have reportedly launched a new attack on the Wandor community in Gwer-East local government area of Benue state

The incident was said to have occurred in the early hours of Friday, March 8, claiming the lives of sixteen persons.

Other areas torched by the attack included Mbaikyor, Mbalom council ward in Gwer-East local government area of the state.

It was gathered the fresh attack was the second to be launched in the community in recent times.

In 2018, herdsmen reportedly killed two Catholic priests and 18 other persons in Mbalom during morning Easter mass.

According to an eye witness, numbed Ujam Amase, the armed herdsmen stormed Mbalom at about 10pm when people were about to settle down in their various houses in the settlements and opened fire on residents.

Amase also said the invaders also set houses ablaze.

According to him, property worth millions of naira including foodstuff was destroyed.

He said: “They killed children and women after shooting them, they used long knives and cut their bodies into pieces like meat,” said Amase who escaped from the scene of the attack.

The names of the 16 corpses recovered are Peter Tion, Nyityo Kyoon, Iorfa Ukombor,
Doopinen Awua, Tyoshaa Mkaanem and Asan Ate.

Others are Asough Ate, Terzungwe Asoo Ate, MWO Mbatsavbun Gbatar (rtd), John Ndahagh Tyohemba, Tertsea Ukombor, Akuma Kpenge, Abume Kpenge, Igba Byuan, Master Ter Byuan Terzungwe Aulugh and a little boy whose name is not known yet.

At the time of filing press the report, inhabitants of the area were seen fleeing in their numbers from the affected settlements for fear of the unknown.
