Rioters on Monday invaded the Sagamu Local Government secretariat in Sagamu, Ogun State and carted away the mace of the council’s legislative house.
The violent protests follow the scarcity of new naira notes.
It was earlier reported that the angry youths barricaded the major highways in Sagamu Monday morning.
The protesters kicked against the policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) banning the old N500 and N1000 notes, even when the new ones are unavailable.
A youth in Sagamu told newsmen that some banks were partly torched.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State police command and other security agencies have deployed to the ancient town to restore peace,as some arrests have been made.
Normalcy has been restored in greater parts of Shagamu now. CP Frank Mba is personally leading police teams and some military men to tackle the situation, Ogun State police spokesperson, Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed.
