House of Representatives majority leader, Alhassan Ado Doguwa has announced his intention to join the race for the Speaker of the 10th National Assembly.

Report has it that Doguwa made the declaration on Sunday in a letter of intent addressed to the members elect.

He said, “I am delighted to congratulate you on your election to the 10th Nigerian Assembly. The call to leadership is one laced with responsibilities and unalloyed commitment to the commonwealth of Nigerians, expressed through a unanimous ballot casting that led to your victories”.

The journey to nation-building has started, and we are here once again to steer the ship where the collective voices of the Nigerians whose trust has been vested in us, have been total to an admirable end.

I want to use this privilege to communicate my desire to contest for the office of the Speaker of the House. My passion for nation-building has fuelled my desire to seek this office at this critical time when various divergent views of governance exist in different zones in the nation.

It would be recalled that in February, Doguwa was arrested by the Nigeria Police at the Aminu Kano International Airport while boarding a flight to Abuja over his alleged role in the killing of several persons and burning of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, secretariat during the 2023 presidential polls.

He was also alleged to have fired shots at the public with a pistol belonging to his Orderly.

There is an indication that Doguwa will be contesting against Deputy Speaker, Idris Wase (APC, Plateau); Sada Soli (APC, Katsina), Muktar Betara (APC, Borno) Tunji Olawuyi (APC, Kwara); Tajudeen Abbas (APC, Kaduna); Abubakar Makki (APC, Jigawa); Aminu Jaji (APC, Zamfara); Yusuf Gagdi (APC, Plateau); Ben Kalu (APC, Abia); and Miriam Onuoha (APC, Imo) over who becomes the Speaker of the 10th National Assembly to be inaugurated in June.
