APC Conducts Delegate Congresses In Rivers Amid Protest By Sen Abe’s Loyalists

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State on Wednesday conducted its wards, local government and national delegates congresses across 319 wards in the state.

This is despite the protest by members of the party loyal to Senator Magnus Abe against the conduct of the exercise.

The protesters, who converged at the state party secretariat on Thursday morning, alleged that the process had been “hijacked” by some party leaders.

Inspite of the protest which later led to shootings by security operatives, the congress went ahead at the various wards in the state.

The officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as well as security agencies, were present during the conduct of the congresses.

The exercise was conducted using the option A4 method of election where members queued behind their preferred candidate.

Party leaders commended the process and described it as “free and transparent”.

Meanwhile, Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Friday Eboka, has dismissed reports that one person died during the protest at the APC state secretariat.

Eboka who visited the scene of the protest said his men “were professional” in resisting those who wanted to hijack the protest to cause trouble in the state.

He however assured that the police are ready to “protect live and property” and would “arrest” anyone trying to cause trouble in the state.
