Chelsea have reached an agreement with Benfica over the club-record signing of Enzo Fernandez. The midfielder will become the most expensive transfer in Premier League history with a deal worth in excess of £105million.
The breakthrough comes after 24 hours of extensive talks between the two clubs. The structure of the payments were said to be a stumbling block in negotiations but Behdad Eghbali is said to have conducted tense negotiations to complete the deal.
Fernandez will be the Blues’ eighth addition of the January transfer window and will join Benoit Badiashile, Mykhailo Mudryk, Noni Madueke and Joao Felix in Graham Potter’s first-team squad.
It is now a race against time to ensure all the correct documents are sent to the relevant governing bodies before the 11pm british time deadline. Should they do so, the Blues will be granted an extra two hours to complete the deal and make Fernandez the club’s most expensive signing.
The World Cup winner has been Chelsea’s priority target throughout the January window, with Todd Boehly desperate to bolster Graham Potter’s options in midfield. The Blues did explore a deal for Brighton and Hove Albion star Moises Caicedo and saw a bid rejected.
