Comrade Boris Ugo-Egeonu Calls for Transparency and Accountability Ahead of Abia Local Government Elections
The unclear framework surrounding the forthcoming Local Government elections in Abia State is a concerning indicator, reminiscent of the murky political trends seen under previous administrations. As the election approaches, it becomes increasingly worrisome that the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) has yet to provide adequate road-map. This lack of disclosure raises red flags, especially with the clock ticking down to the polls.
Firstly, a clear and open process would encourage prospective candidates from various political parties to participate freely and make meaningful contributions in the upcoming elections. Secondly, and more crucially, maintaining transparency would solidify the progress made during the 2023 polls, which marked a turning point in Abia’s political landscape.
Looking at the broader picture, if Abia can successfully maintain the integrity of its elections, it will not only pass the test in the eyes of Nigerians but also set a national example. It is our responsibility, as Abians, to uphold the dignity and integrity of the Labour Party, using these local government elections as a litmus test for the national stage in 2027 and beyond. If given the opportunity, we must offer all-inclusive governance to benefit not just Abians, but Nigerians as a whole, and protect our nascent democracy.
We must learn from past mistakes and not take Abia for granted. The Labour Party rose to power as a revolt against 24 years of misrule, corruption, and deprivation. Importantly, this victory was not achieved by Labour Party members alone but through the collective will of the people. Thus, it is imperative that Governor Dr. Alex Otti and the Abia State Government ensure that the election process is transparent, at least to maintain the trust of Abians going into 2027.
Achieving national influence is no small feat, especially in a political system plagued by corruption and election rigging. However, we now live in an era where technology can support free, fair, and credible elections if utilized properly.
In my view, we have come too far to bow to the whims of detractors who would undo the progress we’ve made. The people of Abia, from all walks of life, are hopeful that the state will never return to the dark days before the 2023 general election. It is vital that we continue to play by the rules, ensuring that the due diligence and sanity restored in our political system are preserved.
