LG Financial Autonomy: Years of Agitations Paid Off Finally – Rep Sam Onuigbo
Board member of the North East Development NEDC, Rep Sam Onuigbo on Thursday hailed the Supreme Court judgement which granted financial autonomy to Nigeria’s 774 LGAs.
The NEDC board member who doubles as the Chairman of the Committee on Security, Climate Change, and Special Interventions described the apex court’s ruling as a fitting compensation for all including himself who for several years assiduously worked for the realization of financial autonomy to the LGAs.
Rep Onuigbo who represented Ikwuano/Umuahia North and South Federal Constituency in the 8th and 9th sessions of the National Assembly recalled the enormous work the National Assembly accumulated towards the realization of LG autonomy via constitutional amendments, but all were frustrated by the State governors.
Onuigbo maintained that as the third tier of government, empowered LG councils which are allowed to function independently would contribute to driving down democracy dividends to the grassroots as well as enhance the battle against insecurity and unemployment in the Country.
