Ondo PDP berates Akeredolu over hike in UNIMED tuition fees

The Ondo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has lashed out at the state government over the sudden hike in the fees of the state government-owned University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, UNIMED.

According to the state Publicity Secretary, Kennedy Peretei, in a statement issued on Sunday, the new school fees introduced by Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu could be described as the height of insensitivity.

With the new schedule released by the management of UNIMED, the fees to be paid by non-indigenous students were over 50 percent higher than what indigenous students will pay.

The new schedule further revealed that non-indigenous students studying medicine in the pre-clinical year would pay N2.245 million per session while indigenous students will pay nothing less than N1.320 million per session.

Indigenous students studying courses like Biochemistry and Physiology are to pay N350,000 per session and non-indigenous students are to pay N400,000, while those studying Dentistry in the preclinical years would pay N2.245 million for non-indigenous students and N1.320 million for their indigenous counterparts.

Peretei said the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in the state failed to consider the economic situation of the country before coming out with the fees.

While urging parents who cannot afford the fees to withdraw the children and wards from the institution, Peretei said Akeredolu failed to realise that the state is a civil service state.

Comparing the neighbouring state, the PDP said “At Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti students of Medicine and Surgery require only N468,750.00 for 2021/2022 session. For Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye N176,396.00 will be enough for the same course.”
