PDP mute on zoning, holds presidential primaries May 28

Nigeria’s leading opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party, has delayed the decision on which zone of the country its presidential candidate will emerge. This is as the party fixed May 28, 2022, for holding its national convention, where such candidate may finally unveil.

The PDP, on Wednesday, released its ‘Schedule of Activities and Timetable for the Year 2022/2023 Elections’.

The release of the timetable was one of the decisions the party took at its 95th National Executive Council meeting, which ended on Wednesday.

According to the party, forms for nomination and expression of interest by its presidential aspirants are pegged at N40million.

It also set up a 37-member Zoning Committee to recommend to it how to resolve to zone of the various elective offices to be filled.

The Cornet reports that PDP has threaded cautiously on the issue of zoning of presidential ticket. Power sharing has always been a controversial issue between Nigeria’s huge north and its southern parts.

Northern politicians who wants to be president from the PDP are a former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar; former Senate President, Bukola Saraki; Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal; Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed; and ex-governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Their southern counterparts are a former Senate President and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Pius Anyim; former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose; ex-governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi; media personality, Dele Momodu, etc.
