Portugal coach, Santos told to bench Cristiano Ronaldo

Dutch legend, Ronald de Boer, has urged Portugal manager, Fernando Santos, to bench captain Cristiano Ronaldo when his team clash with Switzerland in the 2022 FIFA World Cup round of 16 tie on Tuesday night in Qatar,

Ronaldo once again was in the headlines for the wrong reasons after his public strop after being substituted in the second half of Portugal’s 2-1 World Cup final group stage defeat against South Korea last Friday.

Speaking ahead of Portugal’s match with Switzerland, De Boer told Talksport: “It is not only Ronaldo, it is everything that comes with him. Everybody has an opinion.

“The weight you get on your shoulders when you leave him out… you’ve to respond to that. Everybody will only talk about Cristiano Ronaldo and nothing else.

“It is not about the game you are going to play against Switzerland. Basically, it is about why you put him on the bench or why you start with him. You never do it right, probably. If I were the manager, I would put him on the bench.”

The kick-off time for Portugal vs Switzerland is 8 pm.
