Merit should supersede rotation – Ex-Gov Adamu dismisses Zoning

Former Nasarawa Governor, Abdullahi Adamu says merit should be considered ahead of zoning in 2023.

The lawmaker said calls for rotation of offices are unconstitutional and “wishful thinking”.

Adamu, the Senator representing Nasarawa West District, spoke to reporters on Monday in Abuja.

We are not being practical. How do you zone it? The constitution says you can only become a president through the ballot box,” he said.

Adamu insisted that no section of the Nigerian constitution backs zoning or rotation.

He reminded proponents that the constitution is being reviewed and that if they want the presidential position to be zoned, a proposal should be made.

You can’t just whisk away, a situation that is fundamental to the life of a country. You can’t talk of merit and talk of zoning. On the issue of rotation, let us just go by merit,” he added.

Adamu advised political parties to sell themselves, their candidates and allow Nigerians to decide the presidential results at the polls.
