Manchester United interim coach, Ralf Rangnick, has confirmed that veteran striker Edinson Cavani will remain absent when his side tackles Atletico Madrid in the Champions League round of 16 first-leg on Wednesday in Spain.
Rangnick said Cavani would miss the Champions League clash against the LaLiga champions at the Wanda Metropolitano due to a groin injury.
The German said this on Tuesday during his pre-match press conference.
Man United head to the match following a 4-2 victory against Leeds United in the Premier League last weekend.
“No, Edi [Cavani] will not be able to make the trip,” Rangnick said.
“He didn’t train and he has not been training for the last couple of weeks, so he’ll not be part of the group.
“He has problems with his groin and, as long as he doesn’t feel able to fully sprint, it doesn’t make sense to train him and to force him back into training.
“I think he’s got enough experience to know by himself if he is fully available again.”
