HURIWA noted that there are many camps of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) scattered all over the country because there is no government in place anymore.
Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), has berated the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government, saying it has given leverage to insecurity in the country by not only tolerating and saving terrorists and killers of Nigerians from going to prison but resettling them in society.
The association said many Nigerians have been denied their right to life as terrorists have taken over the country, killing hundreds of thousands and rendering millions homeless.
HURIWA noted that there are many camps of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) scattered all over the country because there is no government in place anymore, lambasting President Muhammadu Buhari’s government.
Speaking on ‘Reflection on Situation of IDPs in the FCT’ to mark this year’s World’s Human Rights Day 2022, the National Coordinator of the HURIWA, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, told newsmen in Abuja that any nation that fails to make the rights of its citizens paramount is a failed state.
According to Onwubiko, Nigeria’s situation is worse because apart from the fact that the government has accommodated terrorists, allowing them to operate at will, it also resettles them into society but does not pay adequate attention to the victims of terror attacks.
Commemorating World’s Human Rights, Onwubiko said, “Violence is everywhere and the people no longer enjoy their rights to freedom of movement and the most important rights which are rights to live as talked about in section 33(1) of the Constitution.”
He added, “The reason why some are setting up organisations is to make sure that Nigeria doesn’t collapse. Have you ever thought about the possibility of Nigeria collapsing today, where are we going to go? So if suddenly becoming an IDP is like getting back to ground zero.
“Those are the people that are so disadvantaged and marginalised. They are suffering not because they’re the worst kinds of creatures or because they deserve it but because there’s no government. Because there’s a lot of government incompetence. The government is not living up to expectations.
If the government is living up to expectations and enforcing the fundamental duty of government which is to protect lives and property there’ll be no IDPs.
Nigeria’s situation is worse because apart from the fact that the government has tolerated terrorists to be all over the place, the government has also brought out a policy where they say they want to deradicalize terrorists.
Somebody who has killed a thousand people they’ll bring from prison where he is supposed to be and instead of sending him to court to face judgment, they do deradicalization and resettle him. And nobody talks about the victims, the IDPs who are suffering.
