The 2023 General Elections:A Defining Moment In The History Of Nigerian Democracy To Save Judicial Rascality And Place Our Nation On The Road To Economic Recovery
With recent events in the polity and judicial rascality being perpetuated in the APC – led administration of President Muhammadu Buhari,it is interesting to note that Nigerians are not supposed to be surprised by the flagrant delivery of justice,ex – party motions and injunctions and lack of respect for the rule of law, which the government swore to uphold,a development that negates the tenents of democratic principles and undermine our democratic process turning Nigeria into a “Banana Republic”, which poses a danger to our overall unity as a nation and a threat to our democracy.
For almost 8 years of APC rule in Nigeria, the administration of justice has been a complete mess, ranging from the illegal removal of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen,to the flagrant disobedience of the pronouncement of the discharge and acquitted order of the leader of IPOB,Mazi Nnamdi Kanu by the Court of Appeal,to the removal of a duly elected Governor of Imo State,Rt Hon,Emeka Ihedioha, who came first in a keenly contested election with the APC’s candidate, Senator Hope Uzodinma, who came a distant fourth,to assume the position of governor.A situation that has raised palpable fear within the Nigerian society.
The APC – led government did not stop at that.On 26th of January,2023, the Osun State election petition tribunal, constituted by the same government declared former governor Adegboyega Oyetola of the party as winner of the governorship election, which was won by the PDP candidate,Ademola Adeleke amid wild jubilation from the people of the state.
This situation continued unabated with the Supreme Court verdict on election matters concerning the recently concluded primaries of the party for Yobe North and Akwa Ibom North East Senatorial districts which was won by Alhaji Bashir Machina and DIG Ekpuodum respectively, only to be replaced by the Senate President Ahmed Lawan and Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, who did not even stand for the party’s primaries.A development which negates the 2022 Electoral Amandment Act passed by the National Assembly. The Supreme Court went ahead to give an ex- party order restraining the CBN from halting the Naira Note swap, a matter in which it has no jurisdiction over as enshrined in the 1999 constitution which gives the Apex bank the powers to issue out policies on the currency management and operations.
It is clear and certain that the APC as a party has come to,not only destroy what we have worked for, suffered for and sacrificed for,all for the sake of democracy in Nigeria;but has come to install and impose a leadership in Nigeria,of which the masses will be their “slaves”.
This is evident from the party’s national convention, which produced a former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as Presidential candidate whose character is questionable, whose identity is yet to be unravelled, whose source of wealth is yet to be scrutinized and his educational background unknown to the people; to the Vice Presidential candidate, a former governor of Borno State and incumbent Senator representing Borno Central at the Senate, whose activities and involvement in the sponsoring of the terrorist group,Boko Haram in the North – East region of the country has never been challenged, prosecuted and brought to book.
It will be disheartening for Nigerian to toe the path of ethnicity, sentiment, tribe, religion or even mediocrity as the general elections draw closer when casting their votes to choose a leader to oversee the affairs of the nation for the next 4 years. We have suffered judicial rascality, untold hardship, economic deprivation, political instability, killings and insecurity, kidnapping, torture, lack of employment, lack of adequate power supply, lack of good governance, lack of basic amenities, incessant strike actions by tertiary institutions and related organisations, lack of proper medical care and above all, lack of democracy and it’s principles of rule of law in the hands of these monsters called,”APC”.
2023 is another year God has given us to write our wrongs. This time,no more jokes,no more pranks,no more dilly-dallying,no more politics, sentiments and tribalism. We need to come together as one inorder to make Nigeria a safe heaven for all and sundry.
