President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to approve the immediate termination of appointments of three suspended Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) representing Abia, Sokoto, and Adamawa States.
Cdanewsonline.com reports that this request was conveyed in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary on Wednesday.
The affected RECs are Ike Uzochukwu (Abia), Hudu Yunusa-Ari (Adamawa), and Nura Ali (Sokoto).
They were initially suspended over alleged misconduct during the 2023 general elections.
According to President Tinubu, the suspension of the RECs predates his administration, as INEC already sanctioned them before he assumed office over a year ago.
The Senate is invited to note that the three Resident Electoral Commissioners have been suspended for misconduct since March 2022 before the advent of the current administration,” Tinubu’s letter stated. He urged the lawmakers to consider his request swiftly, assuring them of his highest regard.
Meanwhile, it is expected that President Tinubu will, in the coming days, forward nominees to the Senate for confirmation to fill the vacant positions. The affected officials were accused of electoral infractions during the last general elections, prompting their suspension.
Notably, Hudu Yunusa-Ari, the REC for Adamawa, gained widespread attention for his controversial role in the state’s gubernatorial election. With the President’s latest move, the fate of the suspended officials now rests in the hands of the Senate.
