UK govt speaks on Nigeria’s 2023 Elections

The British Government has said the world is watching to see how Nigeria would conduct its 2023 general elections.

Catriona Laing, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria spoke at the opening ceremony of a civil society, YIAGA Convergence yesterday.

She said the world is also watching if Nigerians would accept the results of the election and support their new leader.

Laing, however, called on Nigerians to ensure they register to participate in the 2023 election.

According to Laing: “We honestly really believe for Nigeria, for Africa, for the world that the outcome of this election and the conduct of this election is massively important.

It has been a little bit of a rocky road for Nigerian democracy since 1999 but the country has stuck with it.

Speaking for my government and the new US administration, we are very conscious; we need to build a coalition of democracies.”

She expressed hope that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, would deliver “a good election and the Electoral Act, hopefully, will be signed soon by the President for the electronic transmission of votes”.
