Congratulations on 2024 International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women
On behalf of the United Nations-POLAC, I, Amb. Prof. Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies, Country President of United-Nations Positive Livelihood Award Centre UNITED-NATIONS POLAC, extend warmest congratulations to all women and girls worldwide on this significant occasion of the 2024 International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
Today, we stand in solidarity with survivors of violence, honor the memories of those who have lost their lives, and reaffirm our unwavering commitment to ending the scourge of violence against women and girls.
As we observe this day, we recognize the progress made, but also acknowledge the immense work that remains. We must continue to challenge harmful gender stereotypes, promote gender equality, and support policies and programs that protect women’s rights.
Today, November 25, marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. This day is observed to raise awareness about the devastating impact of violence against women and girls. The United Nations Secretary-General’s UNiTE campaign is drawing attention to the alarming escalation of violence against women under the theme, “Every 10 Minutes, a woman is killed. #NoExcuse. UNiTE to End Violence against Women”.
According to UN Women, almost one in three women have been subjected to physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence, non-partner sexual violence, or both, at least once in their life. The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is a call to action to end this pervasive human rights violation.
The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, which begins on November 25, is an opportunity for governments, civil society, and individuals to come together to prevent and respond to violence against women and girls.
To all women and girls, I say: You are strong, resilient, and deserving of respect, dignity, and freedom from violence. We stand with you and will continue to work tirelessly to create a world where you can thrive.
As we celebrate today, let us all as women continue to unite to end violence against women and girls. Together, we can make a difference.
