World Teachers’ Day: Senator Akobundu Has Demonstrated Commitment to Teachers’ Development -Jude Chijioke Ndukwe

Every October 5 is World Teachers’ Day! So as the world marks the Day today, 5th October, it is a time for all to reflect on how teachers have been appreciated and valued by everyone for their immense contributions to the development of humanity and society.

Teachers are known to be the ones who help in imparting knowledge and shaping characters, hence, their roles in the sustenance and growth of knowledge and virtue in the society cannot be overdmphasised. It therefore becomes a thing of joy that permeates society when individuals, groups or corporate organisations, take the task of promoting the training and empowerment of teachers so there can be fairly enough of them who are better equipped to cope with the challenges associated with their noble profession.

It is in keeping with this virtuous task that the Senator representing Abia Central at the National Assembly, Senator Austin Akobundu, sponsored the training of 113 members of his senatorial district at the prestigious National Teachers Institute (NTI). The 3-year full scholarship awarded to the beneficiaries by the Senator is in tandem with the theme of this year’s World Teachers’ Day which is “Valuing Teacher Voices: Towards a New Social Contract for Education”. By extension, such a gesture is indicative of the Senator’s dedication to the education of children and youths of Abia Central in particular and Abia State as a whole.

So, as teachers celebrate their Day today, a clarion call is put out to other public-spirited individuals, public officials, groups and corporate organisations, to emulate the Senator by supporting our teachers in all ways possible in order to build a more knowledgeable and enterprising generation for society.
