Zamfara: Bakalori Dam in Talata-Mafara claims 8 lives in one week

Residents of Talata Mafara in Zamfara State have lamented the rate at which the drainage, constructed for dry season farming by the federal government has been claiming lives.

The residents lamented that the waterways of Bakalori dam, linking Bakura, Talata Mafara Local Government Area has drowned eight persons in one week.

CDAnews reports that the recent tragedy happened on Saturday when the corpse of one Saifullahi Aminu Mayanchi alongside four others was recovered after an intensive search by the local search and rescue team at Talata Mafara Canal.

The late Saifullahi Aminu Mayanchi was the biological son of Aminu Mayanchi, a member of the correspondents’ chapel of the Zamfara Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists(NUJ).

Aminu Mayanchi revealed that his son, Saifulkahi was declared missing after he was last seen inside the canal taking a bath yesterday evening.

Reports said immediately he was declared missing, some of the local rescue teams embarked on a search for him but they discovered four additional bodies in the canal before their target was found lifeless.

Explaining his ordeal to his colleagues in Talata-Mafara who paid him a condolence visit, Aminu Mayanchi who took consolation in Allah described the incident as an act of God.

According to him, within one week, a total of eight persons drowned inside the canal in the area.

Every year we are witnessing such tragedy in our area and as I am talking to you, this year we have lost eight persons including my son after been drowned in the Canal” he lamented.

Late Saifullahi Aminu Mayanchi has since been buried according to Islamic rights in Talata Mafara town.
